Internet filtering software is usually platform-specific, since it is installed directly on the client computer. This creates coverage problems: Do all computers have the right amount of filtering in place? Can users disable the software? Can the software be updated? Then there are additional complications in a multiple-platform environment is the Mac Internet filtering software giving the same coverage as Windows or Unix software? Are comparable solutions available for Windows, Unix, and Mac Internet filtering software? Trying to find platform-compatible filtering solutions can require installing platform-specific software individually on each computer or installing Internet filters on all web servers, chat servers, file servers or other servers to filter content as it is passed through the network.
iPrism Mac Internet filtering software is a network filtering appliance, with kernel-level filtering as well as filtering applications, and provides a central point for filtering. There is no need to install Mac Internet filtering software on some computers and then equivalent Windows or Unix software on the other computers in the network; filtering is applied to the entire network through iPrism.

In full deployment, iPrism Mac Internet filtering software is installed as a transparent bridge, plugged in between the firewall and the router or switch. All network traffic, inbound and outbound, passes through the appliance, and goes through two levels of filters:
- Kernel-level filtering reviews every packet based on the source or destination IP address, protocol type, and other information about the traffic. iPrism Mac Internet filtering software is integrated in the core of the operating system, so there are no missed packets, yet filtering is much faster, about twice as fast as other Mac Internet filtering software packages. There is little effect on latency.
- Application filtering looks for more detailed information based on the access rules set in the user profiles, such as the time of day, the URL, bandwidth, and other restrictions.
There are many advantages to having a filtering appliance like iPrism rather than Windows, UNIX, or Mac Internet filtering software installed locally:
- Simple web-based configuration. All filters are configured through a web interface and can be used in tandem with existing LDAP directories, users, and groups for easy application.
- Security. Users cant circumvent filtering by changing the filter settings, disabling the software, or bypassing a proxy. iPrism Mac Internet filtering software filtering has never had an internal or external breach, so it is absolutely secure and your network is always protected.
- Low overhead and minimal maintenance. iPrism Mac Internet filtering software is part of the filtering appliance; there is almost no administrative overhead or management.
