Internet filtering software is usually platform-specific, since it is installed directly on the client computer. In full deployment, iPrism Mac Internet filtering software is installed as a transparent bridge, plugged in between the firewall and the router or switch. All network traffic, inbound and outbound, passes through the appliance, and goes through two levels of filters:
- Kernel-level filtering reviews every packet based on the source or destination IP address, protocol type, and other information about the traffic. iPrism Mac Internet filtering software is integrated in the core of the operating system, so there are no missed packets, yet filtering is much faster, about twice as fast as other Mac Internet filtering software packages. There is little effect on latency.
- Application filtering looks for more detailed information based on the access rules set in the user profiles, such as the time of day, the URL, bandwidth, and other restrictions.
