Filtering for a Changeable Network Environment

Network environments are constantly changing, adding new desktops and servers, personal and business laptops, and remote connections through VPNs or programs like Remote Desktop. The dangers from Internet access – viruses and spyware, inappropriate content, lost productivity, identity theft and scams, decreased bandwidth — only increase with changing environments, since the points of vulnerability increase and the control IT has over the environment decreases. iPrism introduces a source of security in this kind of network, a new kind of community Internet filtering technology that protects the network as a whole, rather than focusing protection on individual pieces of hardware.

The first key to iPrism’s community Internet filtering technology is that it is a network filtering appliance, not installed software. iPrism monitors all traffic, for all protocols, on the network as a transparent bridge. This has no effect on network performance and requires no changes to the network configuration itself.

iPrism’s community Internet filtering technology goes beyond simple block/allow rules

based on IP addresses. There are many different kinds of users on a network; a community, from coffee shops to international enterprises, has different members with different needs. iPrism filtering is configured through user profiles, which set different rules for different users. User profiles set restrictions on what users can do:
  • Access control lists (ACLs) for the profile set what categories are monitored (access is allowed, but recorded) or blocked. iPrism’s iGuard database has eight major categories, with 63 subcategories. A main category is selected, then the subcategories are set to be allowed, monitored or blocked. Several categories relate to network dangers, such as Hacking, Copyright Infringement (for legal liabilities), Spyware/Malware, and High Bandwidth. There can be up to eight ACLs set for one profile.
  • Each ACL has a time period when that ACL is in effect. This allows different kinds of restrictions to have looser rules for lunch time or to block all access when the office is closed.
  • Profiles can enforce safe browsing, which filters the results of search engine searches to block inappropriate images or links.
  • Profiles can set whether to prompt users for override passwords or provide links to request access to blocked pages.
The profiles can be tied to LDAP directories, which handle users and groups within a domain, to make applying different profiles to different types of users even easier. iPrism is a revolution in community Internet filtering technology, which can be scaled and adapted to any changes in your network environment.
